An effective way of cutting down on work place illness and sick days, which cost British businesses £34b a year, is to ensure that work stations are kept clean and hygienic.
Computer keyboards and mice have been found to harbour 10m germs, 400 times more than found on a toilet seat. This is because people sneeze and cough over them, eat over them and drop crumbs into them and all too often people are not stringent about the cleanliness of their hands - fecal matter is found on keyboards and mice. The ever increasing popularity of hot-desking has added to this problem.
A new keyboard and mouse that was developed in America is now available in the UK. They have silver nitrate with its extremely effective anti-bacterial properties, embedded during manufacture and they are completely immersible for cleaning - they can even be washed in a dishwasher.
Bruce Whiting, MD, The Keyboard Company, said: "The interest in these keyboards and mice has been huge in just the short time we have been supplying them. People are really attracted to being able to keep their own keyboard and mouse clean and protecting themselves from the infections that dirty keyboards can cause.
"Silver Seal keyboards and mice are already popular in hospitals. We are also getting lots of interest from professional sectors where hygiene is paramount and practitioners use computers, including beauty therapists, dentists and cooks."
