New Year, new start

Released 18/01/2011

As 2011 kicks off to a flying start, we already have one eye on breaking those resolutions next month

Hands up who has managed to keep their New Year's resolutions going? I expect there would be more hands shamefully staying down than springing up about now. It is the same story every year, the gyms offer all the discount memberships and the pubs brace themselves for a frugal month. But once January is over, the two industries switch roles as the desire to sup a pint takes over the lure of the dumbbell.

I am half-way through a dry January. So far, so good, and I'm surprised to add that it hasn't been too much of a problem so far. I was persuaded to take part by two factors. One, the gloating of a colleague who does it every year and makes sure everybody knows how easy he finds it. And two, I was struck down with flu for the first week of the month, preventing my usual visits to the pub. Following that, I figured I was already a quarter of the way through the month so might as well see it through.

Doing a dry January is a more realistic expectation to giving up the demon drink for the whole year. Especially when you consider what is going to greet us at the start of February. The Paperworld Show is taking place in Frankfurt and as anybody who has visited Germany before will testify, it is impossible not to drink there.

So, if I bump into anybody at Frankfurt and seem a little unsteady, I am getting my excuses in early. I have had a month of abstinence, and the steins that our German friends serve up their strong beer in are not for the light hearted. Still, it promises to be a great show regardless of anything else, and we will be sure to keep you updated while we are there.

Cheers!
